Tesla Teases India Launch with 'Coming Soon' Post Ahead of Mumbai Showroom Opening

...

Tesla has officially hinted at its entry into the Indian market with a “coming soon” teaser shared on its newly launched X (formerly Twitter) account for India. The EV giant is set to open its first showroom in the country on July 15 at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

The showroom, referred to as a "Tesla Experience Centre" in media invites, will initially welcome VIPs and business partners. It is expected to open to the general public the following week. Visitors will be able to explore different models, view pricing, and possibly start configuring their orders as early as next week.

Tesla plans to start deliveries of its imported Model Y SUVs by late August, according to a report by Bloomberg. However, due to India’s high import duty—about 70% on fully-built cars under $40,000—the final price for Indian customers is likely to be much higher than U.S. retail prices. This launch will serve as a litmus test to gauge how much Indian buyers are willing to pay for the Tesla brand.

The move comes after years of speculation, delays, and debates over import tariffs. While CEO Elon Musk had previously discussed investing $2–3 billion to establish local manufacturing in India, Tesla’s current focus appears to be on imports rather than domestic production.

Import data from January to June reveals Tesla has brought in around $1 million worth of vehicles and accessories—mainly from the U.S. and China. This includes six Model Y SUVs (five priced at $32,500 and one long-range variant at $46,000), along with multiple Superchargers.

Tesla’s India launch is part of its broader global strategy to tap into emerging markets amid slowing sales elsewhere and excess capacity at its factories. India, the world’s third-largest car market, is seeing a steady rise in EV interest, especially in urban centers, boosted by government incentives and shifting consumer preferences.

In preparation for its launch, Tesla has accelerated hiring in India this year, onboarding store managers, service staff, and sales executives. It is also reportedly scouting for supply chain engineers and vehicle operators, possibly hinting at future developments related to autopilot technology.
