If walking 10,000 steps a day seems intimidating, here’s some encouraging news: new research shows you don’t need that many steps to make a big difference to your health.

A comprehensive global study, published in The Lancet Public Health, has found that walking just 7,000 steps daily can reduce the risk of dementia by 38%, lower the chances of death from any cause by 47%, and decrease the risk of depression by 22%. The study is the most extensive step-count analysis to date, drawing data from 88 studies conducted between 2014 and 2025, involving over 1.6 lakh (160,000) adults from different parts of the world.
