EXCLUSIVE | James Gunn: “Would Love to See an Indian Actor Join the Superhero Universe”

As the release of his much-anticipated Superman approaches, director James Gunn shares exclusive insights into his inspirations and aspirations—particularly his admiration for Bollywood and interest in collaborating with Indian talent.

Gunn, the visionary behind some of the most iconic superhero films in recent years, revealed that Indian cinema has significantly influenced his storytelling style.

“Bollywood films mean a lot to me when I'm crafting stories. They embrace emotion, drama, humor, and music all at once—just like life. Life isn’t limited to a single genre, and that’s something I try to reflect in my films,” Gunn explained.

With the superhero universe expanding globally, Gunn expressed a strong desire to include Indian representation in the DC cinematic landscape—not just in front of the camera but behind it as well.

“I’d absolutely love to see an Indian actor become part of the global superhero universe. But more than that, I want to work with Indian filmmakers too,” he said. “At DC Studios, we believe heroes exist everywhere, and there are storytellers across the globe capable of bringing those characters to life.”

Gunn noted that DC Studios has already begun collaborations in countries like Korea, Japan, and Brazil, and he sees India as a key market for future creative partnerships.

“We’re asking: Who could be our Indian superhero? And which Indian filmmakers are ready to tell stories within the DC Universe? That’s a priority for us,” he added.

While Superman won’t be a traditional retelling, Gunn promises it will carry emotional depth and narrative richness—hallmarks he attributes to his global cinematic influences, including Bollywood.
